The Lead Afterschool Teacher is a part time, 10-month, on-site position that reports to the Auxiliary Programs Director.
Waynflete Afterschool provides students with a space to explore and grow. Our dedicated team creates a variety of activities to engage and inspire our students. These include arts and crafts, sports, hands-on science exploration, team building challenges, outdoor play and exploration, walking field trips, STEAM, cooking projects, multi-generational lessons, and giving back to the greater Portland community. From homework help to fun physical activities, our program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn, grow, and socialize in a relaxed setting after their school day.
Waynflete’s mission is to engage the imagination and intellect of our students, to guide them toward self-governance and self-knowledge, and to encourage their responsible and caring participation in the world. Our aim is to provide a program that combines security with challenge, playful exploration with rigorous expectation, and range of experience with depth of inquiry.
Location: Waynflete Campus (360 Spring St. Portland, ME)
Program hours: After School care is available for Waynflete students Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 3:10 pm to 6:00 pm and Wednesdays from 12:10 pm to 6:00 pm. Most Afterschool teachers depart at 5:00pm. Two teachers remain from 5 to 6:00pm, with the first teacher leaving at 5:30pm and the second leaving after the last student leaves at 6:00pm.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Be in person for all days and hours noted above

Plan and implement engaging activities: arts and crafts, games and outdoor adventures. With enthusiasm, creativity and professionalism.

Supervise one specific grade level group: EC, K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8

Keep the safety of students in mind at all times.

Mentor and guide assistant teacher and Upper School Mentors

Diligently track attendance including student workshop transitions

Complete prep and end of day clean up responsibilities.

Communicate incidents in a timely manner to the Auxiliary Programs Manager.

Provide information to Auxiliary Programs Assistant for monthly Afterschool Newsletters

Participate in all of the Full Fun Days noted below and additional days if available.

Complete DHHS requirements: fingerprinting approval, MRTQ registration, MMR and Tdap vaccination records, online safety training, professional development hours, etc.
Program Expectations:

The Afterschool Program addresses students’ needs at the end of the school day with an inclusive, supportive community, engaging outdoor activities, free choice, socializing, and academic support through the guidance of a nurturing staff.

Lead Teachers design and implement a weekly schedule balancing outdoor free play with organized games and craft choices.
Compensation: $21 - $22 / hour based on experience
Qualifications:
-
Bachelor's degree or coursework in education or related fields required.
-
1+ years of experience working with children in an educational setting.

CPR/First Aid/AED certified preferred.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Dedicated to working collaboratively with a diverse team of talented Afterschool teachers

Passion for working with children and creating meaningful experiences.

Previous experience with diverse populations
