Summary
Title:Middle School Dean of Students and Health and Wellness Coordinator
ID:1159
Description

Waynflete seeks a passionate and developmentally-informed educator to serve as a full-time Middle School Dean of Students and health and wellness teacher starting in late August. The Dean of Students is a relatively new and vital position at the school, focused on working collaboratively and in partnership with the Middle School Director to design, refine, and nurture a student experience that meets the unique needs and capacities of our students in grades six through eight.

A core component of the position is teaching social and emotional learning classes which we call Health and Wellness Seminar. These weekly, trimester-long classes are focused on skill-building and reflection about one’s experience in middle school. Topics include weekly check-ins, goal-setting for academic and personal well-being, time management, understanding diversity, overcoming stereotypes, and communicating with integrity. Discussions include learning about mindfulness and stress reduction, sleep and nutrition, healthy relationships, sexuality, mental health, and preventing substance abuse, and are guided by the CASEL framework. We offer a comprehensive curriculum map and resources to support the teaching of these classes, and expect this position to be responsible for keeping the curriculum current and based on best practices. There is also the possibility of teaching an Upper School Introduction to Psychology class.

The Dean of Students role is dynamic and offers opportunities to support students in developing their voices and making a positive impact on the life of the Middle School. The role involves helping to plan and convene community events, including weekly assemblies, advising a homeroom of about ten students, and collaborating with teaching colleagues as they support student well-being. Meeting with parents, leading the design and implementation of advising curricula, participating in the division’s wellness team, and working with students to address behavioral concerns are other core duties.

Qualifications:

Degree in Education, School Counseling, or a related field.

Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in middle school health and wellness education

Proven track record in implementing and managing student support programs.

Strong organizational and time management skills.

Experience with restorative practices and crisis management.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, parents and colleagues

           Strong mentoring and coaching skills.

Demonstrated commitment to promoting DEIB within the school community.
