Position: Art Teacher for Summertime Arts Program (Grades 2-5)

If you enjoy art, designing and making all sorts of things, and sharing these skills with amazing young people, you will enjoy being an Art Teacher in Summertime Arts! Summertime Arts is  Waynflete’s traditional decades-old arts and crafts program in which campers work with teaching artists to explore different art forms, styles, colors, and media. As an Art Teacher you will emphasize the creative process so campers develop enriching life skills, a love of art, and confidence in their ability as “makers.” Art Teachers report to the Camp Director and support Program Directors during camp sessions.

Location: Waynflete School | 360 Spring Street | Portland, ME 

Compensation: $20 - $22.50 / hour based on experience.

Dates of Employment: We ask that Art Teachers commit to at least 4 weeks of camp.

  • Pre-Camp Training: Exact dates & times TBD - week of June 15, 2026

  • Camp Weeks: 6/22, 6/29, 7/6, 7/13, 7/20, 7/27

  • Camp is closed on 7/3, in observation of Independence Day

Camp Hours:

  • Camp Hours: 8:30am - 3:30pm, Monday - Friday

  • Art Teacher Hours: approximately 7:45am to 3:45pm daily

Responsibilities:

  • Execute all daily camp activities and tasks as proposed by Program Directors and Leadership Team.

  • Lead small groups of Summertime Arts Campers in creative and exciting art projects, using various mediums and adhering to the weekly theme.

  • Plan and teach lessons with enthusiasm, creativity and professionalism.

  • Assist with camper check-in and check-out responsibilities. 

  • Organize and supervise campers throughout the camp day.

  • Complete morning prep and end of day clean up responsibilities.

  • Communicate camper incidents in a timely manner to the Program Director.

  • Proactively address any issues or concerns that could impact our campers’ experience or program quality in partnership with Program Directors.

  • Lead by example in respect and care for the community and campus.

  • Create group unity by building a safe and inclusive environment for campers and counselors.

  • Keep the safety of campers and the camp team in mind at all times. 

  • Attend all required staff meetings and pre-season training sessions.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • 18+ years of age

  • Experience teaching art to children (ages 4-13) as a camp Counselor, educator, etc.

  • Experience in a leadership role in a similar setting

  • First Aid / CPR / AED certified, or willing to certify before June 15th, 2026

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Previous experience with diverse populations
