Job Summary

The Director of Finance and Operations is an integral part of the senior leadership team and is responsible for managing the financial and physical resources of the school, providing or obtaining guidance and direction on a variety of matters including legal issues, school policies and risk management, and providing support for the Board of Trustees and committees. S/he reports directly to the Head of School.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Finance and Operations will:

  • Work closely with the Business Office Manager to:
    -Develop, oversee and ensure implementation of financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard assets, protect confidential information, and ensure accurate financial reporting,
    -Oversee business functions, including: student enrollment, tuition billing and collections issues, accounts payable, contracting, payroll, human resources, hiring, accounting and reporting, regulatory reporting and compliance, investments, insurance, and other business administration activities,
    -Administer the annual budget and multi-year forecasting process to align with the school's goals and mission and maintain account records related to the school’s budgets
    -Provide financial reports to school leadership and the board.
    -Ensure that human resources policies and practices are clearly articulated, consistently applied, and conform to legal requirements.
  • Oversee major construction projects and work closely with the Director of Facilities to manage the plant budgets, oversee regular maintenance and repairs to the buildings, grounds, and equipment at the main campus and the Fore River Campus as well as more extensive renovations and building projects,
  • Serve as key strategic advisor to the Head of School, senior administrative leaders, and the Board of Trustees.
  • Provide support and for the Board of Trustees and its committees including Finance, Audit, Investment, and Facilities. Plan for and document Board meetings and decisions, and revise by-laws.
  • Supervise, mentor and support school managers including the Business Office Manager, Cafe Manager, and Directors of Enrichment, Facilities, Technology and Transportation.
  • Review, revise and develop school policies for students, families and employees.
  • Participate in the development of school strategy, providing recommendations, financial analysis, projections, and other data to inform the process.
  • Understand the culture and climate of the school and the wider educational environment.
  • Model and foster high ethical standards, integrity, and respect for colleagues, alumni/ae, parents, and students in the conduct of the school’s business.
  • Communicate clearly and enthusiastically to all staff and stakeholders.
  • Remain current with business management trends and cultivate professional standards and development by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in local, regional, and national professional organizations.

Qualification Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree, with an advanced degree in law, business and/or organizational development preferred.
  • Five years of experience in nonprofit management, preferably in a school.
  • Proven success in a senior administrative role, preferably working with a board
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities – organizing people and processes
  • High ethical standards
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to work collaboratively with coworkers and other school community members
  • Keen analytical skills and a detail-oriented work style
